The damaging effects of Smartphone addiction
The many health risks that smartphone overuse and addiction can cause are dangerous and are often times overlooked by the user. For instance, staring at the screen of a smartphone for extended amounts of time prevents the brain from releasing melatonin, our natural sleep chemical essential for rest. As a result, our bodies don't understand that we are tired. The overuse of smartphones therefore leads to irregular sleeping patterns and because of this, we do not function as well throughout the day and our working patterns overall wellness are sacrificed for our phones.
Nomophobia
The issue of smartphone addiction has become so damaging, that scientists have coined the term "Nomophobia" to describe the disease of an addicted user. Nomophobia, in other words, is the overwhelming fear of being without your phone. Symptoms of this disease may include anxiety or extreme worrying if you cannot find or use your phone. Experts say, 66% of the population fears losing or being without their phones at any given time.
"Text Claw" is a term used to describe all of the finger cramping and sore muscles that come from long-term scrolling, texting, and gaming on smartphones. An even more common side effect: using your phone for an increased amount of time can result in the inflammation of your tendons and enhance existing conditions, like tendinitis and carpal tunnel.
